While we take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and safe summer break, we are pleased to bring this eighth edition of our “SESEI newsletter – Europe”, providing important snippets from India on the Project priority sectors covering ICT, Smart Cities, Mobility, Electrical Equipment including Consumer Electronics, Energy Efficiency and Environment, etc. for the period of April 2021 to June 2021.

Project SESEI is an important instrument established by European Commission (EC) along with Standards Organisation ETSI, CEN & CENELEC and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) on cooperation between India and Europe around Standards of Emerging Technologies and related Policies. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), alongside city administrations in the country, have also developed the Indian Standard - IS18000:2020 which makes the ArchiMate® Specification available for smart cities applications across India. The standard “IS 18000 Unified Digital Infrastructure – ICT Reference Architecture (UDI-ICTRA)” is the foundational standard in the series. In this series of standards BIS have also released a standard - IS 18004-1:2021: IoT System Part 1 Reference Architecture” which is based on oneM2M specifications.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (Meity) in collaboration with International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H) Smart Cities Mission, Telangana government, and European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC) has initiated a Smart City Living lab which will work to create research and development ecosystem for next-generation technologies designed to improve safety, sustainability, energy efficiency, sanitation, and overall quality of life in densifying cities

In the Automotive sector, India is taking all necessary measures to ensure a robust ecosystem for uptake of Electrical Vehicles. Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme on 'National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage’ has been approved by the Government of India. The manufacturing of ACCs will facilitate demand for EVs, which are proven to be significantly less polluting. As India pursues an ambitious renewable energy agenda, the ACC program will be a key contributing factor to reduce India's Green House Gas (GHG) emissions which will be in line with India's commitment to combat climate change.

In the Telecom Sector, permissions have been granted to the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to start conducting trials for use and applications of 5G technology. TSPs are also expected to facilitate the testing of the indigenously developed use cases and equipment as part of the trials. The TSPs are also encouraged to conduct trials using 5Gi technology in addition to the already known 5G Technology developed by IIT Madras, Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) and IIT Hyderabad. It may further be noted that Indian telecom standards body TSDSI has submitted a vision for 6G to UN body ITU Radiocommunication sector. For faster adoption of IPV6, Ministry of Electronics & IT has launched three new initiatives which will guide & provide necessary technical support, share best practices, and helps in increasing IPv6 adoption.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with aim to deal with e-waste as part of the larger plan to encourage circular economy and ensuring zero to minimal wastage in the use of electronics and electrical sector, has also formulated a policy paper that deals with these issues.
