Objective

Launched in January 2013, The Seconded European Standardization Expert for India (SESEI) project with the primary objective of fostering a stronger relationship between India and Europe in the realm of standardization.  This project was initiated by the European Commission together with EFTA and the three European Standardisation Organisations (CEN, CENELEC and ETSI).

The initiative is designed to enhance the visibility of European standards, facilitate the exchange of best practices, and promote the adoption of Global/ EN standards within India. As a result, the project has played a pivotal role in advancing cooperation on standardization and policy between India and Europe.

The overall objectives of current phase of the SESEI project are:

  • to pursue mutual understanding of standardization approaches and priorities at national and international level.
  • to promote the European standardization model and standards in India and facilitate a dialogue between both sides.
  • to deepen engagement for alignment on standards related issues between India and Europe.
  • Efforts to eliminate Technical Barriers to Trade
  • to improve contacts between partners and relevant players in the Indian administration, industry, and standardization bodies
  • to monitor and gather regulatory and standardization information and raise level of awareness in EC, EFTA and ESOs.
  • to facilitate technical discussions.
  • to build and animate a network of specialists (among stakeholders and stakeholder’s memberships) capable of addressing specific and/or technical issues.
  • to help addressing EU/EFTA/INDIA Industry queries around Standards & Regulations.

The following elements are carried forward in the current phase SESEI project from its previous phase for meeting the above overall objectives:

  1. This project will ensure continuity in various ongoing standardisation activities as far as the SESEI represents the European Standardisation Organizations, CEN, CENELEC and ETSI, the European Commission and EFTA.
  2. The SESEI will be catalysing EU/EFTA/India co-operation at the levels of technical Standardisation and legislative (i.e., the use of standards in support of legislation/policies).
  3. The SESEI will continue to provide a series of intelligence services, which enables European stakeholders to acquire a deep understanding of the Indian Standardisation and related landscape.
  4. The SESEI should relay information about EU/EFTA Standardisation-related information to Indian counterparts, including feedback on India’s reaction to them.
  5. Maintain and increase communication to stakeholders.
  6. The SESEI in consultation with Steering Committee Members and stakeholders will address the EU key policy & Standardisation initiatives such as around Green and Digital transition having trade impact, market access issues (incl. certification), playing by the WTO rules, and any other arising due to different geo-political context.
