Greeting from SESEI!!!

Dear Readers,

On behalf of Project SESEI and its stakeholders, I pray and wish for safety and good health for all of you. I am hopeful that normalcy will return soon and post the Covid-19 pandemic we will emerge stronger.

However, it would be vacuous not to acknowledge the post Covid-19, impacts which the world economy will witness. Covid-19 has already changed the way we work and live. This scenario will further give impetus to more use of technology, innovations, IoT big data and Artificial Intelligence will play a big role in the times to come.

This is our third edition of “SESEI Newsletter India”, providing important developments and standardization related information concerning priority sector covering ICT, Automotive, Electrical Equipment including Consumer Electronics, Smart Cities in Europe, for the period January to March 2020.

CEN CENELEC recently launched BRIDGIT II (Bridging the Gap between Research and Standardization) project to improve the relation between the research and innovation (R&I) community and standardization, to increase the possibility of synergies and foster collaboration. As part of the project, the new website standardsplusinnovation.eu was also released, which will be the main entry point for researchers and innovators to the world of standardization.

On the 5G technologies front, the European Commission’s EMPOWER project has launched a consultation to create and update the advanced wireless 5G technology roadmap based on the analysis of trends for Beyond 5G in the respective research, standards, and spectrum communities. The European Commission has also endorsed the joint toolbox of mitigating measures agreed by EU Member States to address security risks related to the rollout of 5G, the fifth-generation of mobile networks. ETSI also launched a new group dedicated to specifying the fifth generation of Fixed Network (ETSI ISG F5G). Building on previous generations of fixed networks, the 5th generation will address three main use cases, a full-fiber connection, enhanced fixed broadband and a guaranteed reliable experience.

The European Commission presented its strategy for data and Artificial Intelligence. The European data strategy and the policy options to ensure the human-centric development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). A White Paper (PDF) proposing a framework for Artificial Intelligence based on excellence and trust was also released by the Commission.

A technical report on Autonomic Network Management and Control applying Machine Learning and other AI Algorithms was released by ETSI. ETSI TR 103 626, provides a mapping of architectural components for autonomic networking, cognitive networking and self-management. The TR addresses autonomic decision-making and associated control-loops in wireless network architectures and their associated management and control architectures.

Standadrisation and new technologies are also contributing effectively to safety and quality of life. eCall has been developed to support ITS and road safety through automated and real-time communication between vehicles and emergency services. eCall puts the occupants of the vehicle in direct communication with the emergency services and automatically provides the location of the accident. Similarly, ETSI’s Emergency Communication Special Committee has recently released two major specifications, ETSI TS 103 479, for NG112, the next generation of European emergency services and ETSI TS 103 625, for the specific Advanced Mobile Location function. AML is already implemented in 22 countries worldwide following the publication of the first ETSI technical report TR 103 393.

CEN and CENELEC are proud to announce the launch of a new Joint Technical Committee, CEN/CLC/JTC 20, dedicated to hyperloop systems standardization. Hyperloop is a ground-based high-speed transportation system for passengers, living and/or non-living stock, in which vehicles are suspended through contactless means and travel inside a sealed, confined reduced pressure environment. With potential benefits on safety, time-saving, greenhouses gases emissions reduction, and economic value, this technology begins progressively to be on the spotlight.

Many other important developments concerning circular economy i.e. resource efficiency, sustainability concerns, new concepts and standards as announced by the Project partners are highlighted through this newsletter. We have also included a list of events, which were to be held later in the year however, due to existing circumstances, the dates, venue & mode of organization may change.
