India seeks German investments in smart cities

India has sought investments from German companies in areas including smart cities and construction of airports to increase economic cooperation between the countries. India also expressed keenness to increase collaboration with Germany in areas such as smart cities, technology for green energy etc. Currently, 80 Indian companies operate in Germany.

Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises released following notifications:

India to receive $300 million in aid from World Bank for EV push

The World Bank has committed to provide India funds worth $300 million to aid its energy efficiency programme. The move will help the government set up the requisite infrastructure to push forward its ambition of expanding e-mobility in the country. The aid received from the World Bank will supplement the funds that the Centre proposes to raise by levying a one-time fee from conventional fuel based vehicle buyers in a bid to provide financial assistance to the e-mobility programme.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and France in new and renewable energy

The Union Cabinet has approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and France on technical bilateral cooperation in the field of new and renewable energy.   India and France aim to establish the basis for a cooperative institutional relationship to encourage and promote technical bilateral cooperation on new and renewable issues on the basis of mutual benefit, equality and reciprocity.

Government launches National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)

The government launched NCAP, a time-bound national level strategy to tackle increasing air pollution. The NCAP will be a mid-term, five-year action plan with 2019 as the first year. However, the international experiences and national studies indicate that significant outcome in terms of air pollution initiatives are visible only in the long-term, and hence the programme may be further extended to a longer time horizon after a mid-term review of the outcomes.

Cabinet approves Continuation of Atal Innovation Mission

Cabinet has approved Continuation of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), and for incurring expenditure up to Rs. 1000 crore (€125 million) till 2019-20 by Atal Innovation Mission for expanding Atal Tinkering Labs to 10,000 schools in view of their huge success at school level. The aim of the government's flagship initiative is to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

A new National industrial policy, aimed to develop global value chains, and to boost India’s manufacturing competitiveness, is awaiting cabinet approval.  Manufacturing cannot happen end to end only in one geography, and it has to be part of a global value chain and global supply chain. That is why a new industrial policy focusing on developing mutually beneficial value chain and supply chains is required.

Union Cabinet approved new National Electronics Policy (NEP) 2019

The Cabinet has approved National Policy on Electronics 2019 in February 2019, which was proposed by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) in 2018. The Policy aims to position India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) by encouraging and driving capabilities in the country for developing core components, including chipsets, and creating an enabling environment for the industry to compete globally.  NEP 2019 replaces NEP 2012.

Cabinet approved National policy on Software Product

The Union Cabinet has approved the National Policy on Software Products 2019 to develop India as the global Software Product hub, driven by innovation, improved commercialization, sustainable Intellectual Property (IP), promoting technology start­ups and specialized skill sets. Policy aims to help the industry grow at CAGR of 40% to reach USD 70-80 billion by 2025, while creating employment opportunities for 3.5 million people.

Government plans national program on artificial intelligence (AI)

In order to take the benefit of AI and related technologies to the people, Government is planning to launch national program on AI. The program will be catalysed by the establishment of the National Centre for AI. The centre will be established as a hub along with centres of excellence. 9 priority areas had been identified by GoI for the same and a national portal on AI will be developed soon.
