Indian economy is driven from bottom-up by the industry, rather than state controlled from the top. Indian Government plays a very important role in national standards through its main standard development bodies. Even within ministry different departments have specific role in the standards making process. Standardization in India is still regarded as Indian Government’s realm where the role of the industry is to lobby and pursue requirements as industry for modifications. Apart from the industry associations and the industry led lobbying bodies, there are many public private partnership projects initiated by the government for driving the standards development in specific sectors. For the ease of understanding the role of various actors in the realm of standards, we have listed below the short briefs of the standards development bodies , Ministries/ departments, PPP’s and Industry associations in a sector-wise manner.
